MP’s first double-decker bridge:Road below, metro track above; one lane opens at Lavkush Square, Indore-Ujjain travel to get easier

Lavkush Chowraha, one of Indore's busiest traffic junctions, is being transformed into the city's most advanced traffic interchange with Madhya Pradesh's first double-decker bridge nearing completion. The project, being built at an estimated cost of ₹175 crore, has entered its final phase.

Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav inaugurated one carriageway two days ago, providing immediate relief to traffic in one direction.

Construction of the second carriageway is expected to be completed by September 2026. Once fully operational, the bridge will significantly improve connectivity between Ujjain Road, MR-10, Banganga, Arvindo Hospital, the airport and western Indore.

Road and metro to share the same transport corridor

The project is the first of its kind in Madhya Pradesh, integrating road traffic and the metro on a single corridor at different levels along MR-10 Road. Vehicles will use the lower deck, while the metro line will run above it.

By combining two transport systems within the same alignment, the interchange is expected to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion at one of the city's busiest junctions.

Double-decker bridge project launched in 2023 enters final phase

he Indore Development Authority (IDA) began construction of the Lavkush Double-Decker Bridge in 2023. The project progressed in multiple phases because of technical challenges, coordination with the metro corridor and the construction of its steel bow-string structure.

The first carriageway was inaugurated on July 23, 2026, while the second is expected to open by September 2026. During the inauguration, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav said the bridge would play a key role in managing the growing traffic on the Indore-Ujjain route during Simhastha 2028.

With lakhs of pilgrims expected to travel to Ujjain via Indore Airport during Simhastha 2028, the new bridge is set to become a crucial transport link.

Once fully operational, it is expected to reduce traffic congestion on Ujjain Road, improve connectivity between Indore Airport and Ujjain, ease vehicle movement around Banganga, MR-10 and Arvindo Hospital, and help save both travel time and fuel.

The Lavkush Double-Decker Bridge is expected to strengthen the development of the proposed Indore-Ujjain Metropolitan Region (UIMR), a key state government initiative aimed at integrating the two cities through improved economic, industrial, residential and transport infrastructure.

Experts believe the project will become a vital connectivity link, supporting future expansion of road networks, metro services, industrial investment and logistics across the metropolitan region.

Simhastha-focused infrastructure upgrade gathers pace

The bridge is part of a wider infrastructure push that includes the six-laning of the Indore-Ujjain corridor. With Simhastha 2028 approaching, multiple projects involving road widening, flyovers and traffic management are being executed simultaneously.

Once completed, these upgrades are expected to provide faster, safer and more organised travel between Indore and Ujjain while significantly improving traffic movement during the mega religious gathering.
